We love what we do. Being able to come by your home and get you a competitive quote on a new roofing system, help you work with insurance, come out and do the tear off and install your new roofing system; it's what we wake up in the morning for! Our team makes sure to pay attention to the little things, the details. Some

With this particular project there was significant water damage and leakage to the home from wind and storm damage. Our team got up in the attic space to assess the extent of the damage and up on top of the roof to get a full picture of what was going on. The home owner had someone else come out right before us and they hadn't even gotten on top of the roof. A lot of contractors will give a lowball quote and once they get into the fascia and soffit and see the full extent of the damage, they'll go back and amend the contract to include all damage, add more material cost, etc. No one wants to take the time to do all that when the roof has been taken off your home. This forces the client to make a quick, pressured decision and sometimes going with a different roofing contractor just isn't a viable option. We've gotten a few jobs from this exact scenario taking place, and did all the patch work from sub par leftover work.

Once we had a good idea of the work to be done, we got the homeowner a competitive, realistic quote for the whole process from tear off and clean up to the replacement, and were able to get the job done in a week's time.

Roofing Contractor Selection

What factors should be considered when deciding which roofing contractor to use for your roof replacement or repair?

So there's been some damage to your roof. Or maybe you have an old roof that's starting to have some issues. Maybe you had a less than satisfactory job done by a shotty

. There are many factors that can go into your decison of what to do next. What is your budget? What does your schedule look like? How extensive is the wind damage or rain damage? How old are your shingles? We can hopefully help you answer some fairly straightforward questions you may have and put your mind at ease about choosing the right roofing guys for your project.

The pictures listed in the post are examples of sketchy work done by contractors in the Salisbury area that were either in a big hurry to get the job done, didn't have proper supervision over their workers, or just simply weren't qualified to do the work. Anyone looking at the pictures can see that the work that was done is obviously not right, and part of the issue with the first picture is definitely the fact that the roof is just a little older than it should be. Either way, with this particular

, there was a lot of work to be done! Leaking had been going on for quite some time to the point where there was dry rot not only in the fascia but down in the soffit as well, and boards were stsarting to fall down into the attic! Not good!

Our recommendation would be to definitely take a good look at your shingle roof long before all of this damage gets exponentially worse, Wind or rain damage can cause holes that let water in, and that kind of moisture inside your home can take root and eventually cause dry rot that spreads and deteriorates not only your roof but also what's all under it as far as the structure of your home.

The first thing you'll want to do when assessing the extent of rain wind or water damage to your roof is to get up in the attic and see if there's any dry rot going on like what's shown in the pictures below. Obviously the example is of a homeowner that left dry rot to fester for longer than he/she should have, but you get the point. If water damage has extended past the fascia, and even the soffit, it can actually get into affecting the structural integrity of your home.

There are a lot of roofing contractors in Salisbury, or anywhere else for that matter, that will come in at a cheap estimate just to get their foot in the door. Be wary of contractors that don't fully explain the extent of the damage that needs repaired or replaced or that maybe don't get up in the attic or on top of the roof like previously discussed. What tends to happen is that if there is extensive damage, once everything starts getting torn off they will try and go back and adjust the contract. This obviously complicates the process and often leaves homeowners in a position where they want to find someone else to do the work.

A good way t o avoid al of this is to make sure and find a reputable and honest roofer that's going to give it to you straight. A lot of the times that estimate that comes in a couple thousand dollars cheaper might not be the best option. We always strive to be competitive when it comes to getting you an estimate for your roof repair or replacement, but we will give it to you straight nd we're always honest and upfront about our costs and pricing.

Gutter Installation can be a very simple process if you have the right roofing contractor doing the job. Whether it be a replacement or an install on a brand new home, the process is essentially the same.

around the home is to collect and divert rainwater away from your foundation. If water perpetually accumulates around the base of your house this can cause long-term issues including foundational/structure problems or flooding in the basement or crawl space. Suffice to say, keeping an adequate gutter system working properly is a much more inexpensive way to protect the investment of your home than potentially spending thousands or tens of thousands of dollars down the road on more serious repairs.

Hiring an experienced gutter professional or roofing contractor to install or repair your gutters is the simplest way to get your project done in a timely and efficient manner. That being said, it is possible to do the work yourself. For a full install there are a few tools and supplies you will definitely need to have:

The easiest way to make sure that you have everything for your project is to just buy more than enough of everything and just return what you don’t need once the job is completed.

Using an angle grinder to cut your pieces to length is the best way to ensure nice clean lines. You will then install your gutter end caps, either left or right, on the ends of the cut pieces. Just add a bead of sealant and slide on. A crimping tool is our recommendation to accomplish this but using gutter screws or rivets is fine as well.

To install downspout connections, flip upside down and spin it upright to lock into place with your gutter pieces. Then add lots of sealant and attach with screws or rivets. All that being said, we prefer using downspout inserts. These can be placed anywhere along the length of the gutter and are faster to install and work just as well.

would strongly recommend attaching the hangers on the ground before the actual hanging process. Make sure the gutter isn’t hung too high! Use a level to extend the roof out a little further, and the front of the gutter on the high side should start just below that level and slope towards the downspout from there. You can hang a nail and use a string level and chalk line to ensure proper slope. You can also just use a four-foot level all the way down.

You will always want your gutter to shed in the direction of the downspout. A good rule of thumb is to have a ½ inch drop for every 10 ft of gutter length.

To secure the gutter to the fascia of your home, first slide the gutter hangers in place to line up with the rafter tails of the house. Screw them down and test the function with a hose to ensure there are no leaks.

Finally, you will want to install your corner downspout(s). You will use a combination of elbows to bring the downspout back towards the exterior of the home and then secure a length of that with strapping. At this point you can opt to install a rain barrel collection system, or just make sure the water is being diverted from the home.

7 Reasons to Install a Metal Roof over a Traditional Shingle Roof

Generally speaking, most people in the U.S. choose to go with a standard shingle roof installation when replacing their roof or building a new home. The main reason for this is that it is the cheaper option when compared to metal roofing options. Another factor that might contribute to this could be the fact that most, if not all of the houses around have used shingles on their roof and it could make your home stick out a bit.

Apart from that, there aren’t many reasons why a new or renovating homeowner shouldn’t consider applying some type of

to their home. While it may be more of a monetary investment in the short term, metal roofing stands the test of time in that It can last up to 50 or 60 years longer. If you’ve been looking for a reason to up fit your home with a new metal roof, look no further. Listed below are all the reasons we could think of to replace your old raggedy shingle roof with the best solution your local roofing contractor has to offer.

           Lightweight

First and foremost, what you’ll notice about the metal sheets that will potentially be installed to your roof is how lightweight they are. While much more durable than a traditional shingle style solution, they are easier to manage and repair should it take any kind of storm damage. It is also much better to have this lighter load of weight up so high over your home’s structure in terms of safety and convenience.

           Options

Who doesn’t like having more options? Metal roofing solutions provide a much wider range of options when it comes to texture, color and even the type of metal the homeowner would prefer. While it is true that generally asphalt shingle roofing has more color options, in many areas the only colors available to suppliers are black and gray. This is obviously depending on the market and consumer demand, but metal roofing can always be sealed and painted however the homeowner would like.

While a Standing Seam steel roof is usually the longest lasting, best looking option, there are many other material options including tin, steel, aluminum, copper, and zinc. A standing seam roofing solution can be made of either steel, aluminum, copper or zinc but is most commonly made of steel. This is the most durable option, and it makes sense to try and get the most life out of it when investing the extra money.

Something else to consider is the cost of labor. Since it usually doesn’t take near as long to install a metal roof and do it right, the cost of labor is almost always cheaper. It won’t amount to much of a change in the overall price since it can be a rather expensive undertaking, it can help mitigate those expenses a bit.

           Durability and longevity

As mentioned before, shingles typically only last around 30-40 years. This is heavily dependent upon the region and climate as well as the year-round weather conditions for the area. A metal roof’s longevity, however, is less dependent on the surrounding area’s conditions. Even at it’s best, a shingle roof will usually have to be replaced or need serious repairs at least twice before a standing seam steel roof. Now that’s getting more bang for you buck! Not to mention it’s resistance to the elements in that it will retain it’s color much longer and withstand more damage from hail/fire/tree damage. It may help to alleviate some concerns of having such an expensive material on top of your home to know that it can be fixed rather easily in comparison to the cheaper option.

           Curb appeal

While also being the most responsible long-term choice for your roof replacement or installation, a nice new metal roof is one of the best ways to up fit your home and give it a modern look. It’s not a bad thing to stand out! Impress your neighbors with the latest and greatest in roofing technology. This can be especially valuable when considering the resale value of your home. Instead of picking the cheaper option to save the money, consider the long-term implications of how your home will sell to a prospective buyer.

           Less maintenance

There are two different types of steel roofs. Corrugated roofing is the much cheaper option, but it doesn’t look quite as appealing to the eye and may require more maintenance. It typically doesn’t last as long as it’s counterpart, standing seam, and is often used for sheds, barns and non-residential buildings.

While we’ve covered standing seam roofing fairly comprehensively already, there are a few other important facts to include. Standing seam roofing is much more customizable than any other roof and requires much less maintenance than a corrugated roof. They tend to last much longer than any other roofing options, with upwards of 100 years of use for a single roof.

The only downside to choosing a standing seam over a corrugated roof might be that there is more of a likelihood of hail damage, but this is simply because there is more surface area that is flat. This is one of the things that makes it so visually appealing: the fact that it looks more like one single entity as opposed to sheets that have been put together.

           Energy Efficiency

Because of the simple fact that metal roofing reflects sunlight, this option is much more energy efficient for your home. Especially in a hotter climate where much more cooling can be required, a metal roof will deflect heat from the sun as opposed to soaking it all in like an asphalt shingle roof.

Metal roofing is also much more conducive to applying attachments such as solar panels. While installing panels to a shingle roof is always a viable option, the difficulty in installing and removing the panels from your metal roof is much less. This means that generally the cost of labor and attachment equipment should be much less of an undertaking.

How to tell when it's time to replace your roof

There are many signs that you may need to replace your dilapidated roof, especially when it comes to shingle that wear down over time. Let us help you assess the extent of wear and tear.

Roofing Installation can be a hassle, leave it to the professionals..we've got you "covered"!

We know from experience that it's not exactly fun replacing your roof. Most roofing solutions, depending on if its architectural or 3-tab shingle work, last generally either 15 or 30 years max. If you're not sure what type roof you have and easy way to tell is that the three-tab shingles are made out of a single layer so it's a flatter less defined surface. Architectural shingles are more pronounced, last longer, and are more versatile when it comes to styling options available to you.

As a homeowner, you want the best for you and your family. Being a family owned business ourselves, we totally get that. We wouldn't ever recommend an unnecessary roofing replacement or service that we didn't feel like you actual needed. Our bottom line is to provide quality customer care and support while doing the highest quality work of any contractor anywhere around. We'll stake our name on that and never back down from out-doing a competitor.

There are a few tell-tale signs that your roof has seen better days and is in need of a

. When the sun beats down on your roof year after year, it causes that asphalt material to slowly deteriorate, and granules slowly lose their bonds to one another. Shingle edges curling at the edges are probably the most noticeable sign of roof wear and tear, but cracking, bald spot, and even just discoloration can let you know that problems may be following closely behind.

Spotty work done by a sub-par contractor may not be very noticeable at first, but rest assured after 10-20 years these problems can start to show themselves. If done correctly, your roof can do for you what it was intended to do for the proper amount of time. If however the roofing materials were not bonded together properly, edges aren't straight and uniform, or if flashing material has been reused, this will shorten the lifespan or your shingle roof.
